The First International Standard for Green and Low-carbon Practices in the Iron and Steel Industry, with CERI as an In-depth Co-drafter, Officially Released

Date:2026-06-22

Recently, the first international standard for green and low-carbon practices in the Iron and steel industry, Guidance for the Application of Low-Carbon Technologies in Steel Plants (ISO/TR 25088:2026), was officially released, and a publicity and implementation meeting was held. The introduction of this standard marks a new stage of standardization and normalization for the green and low-carbon transformation of the global iron and steel industry.

Capital Engineering & Research Incorporation Limited (hereinafter referred to as CERI), as the lead drafting organization, deeply participated in the entire process of developing the standard. Based on its deep technical expertise and extensive engineering experience, CERI injected core strength into the formulation of this international standard, fully demonstrating the technological leadership and industry influence of China's iron and steel industry in the global low-carbon steel sector.

This international standard was developed under the leadership of China and brought together leading experts in the iron and steel industry from multiple parties. The standard focuses on the low-carbon transition across the entire iron and steel production process, covering key stages such as sintering, ironmaking, steelmaking, and rolling. It systematically integrates cutting-edge low-carbon technologies, including hydrogen metallurgy, hydrogen-enriched carbon cycles in blast furnaces, and carbon dioxide capture and utilization, providing authoritative technical guidance for steel enterprises to carry out low-carbon technological upgrades and achieve emissions reductions and carbon reduction. The release of this standard fills a gap in international standards regarding the application of low-carbon technologies in the iron and steel industry, marks an important milestone in the international recognition of China's low-carbon steel technologies, and establishes a unified technical framework for the green and high-quality development of the global iron and steel industry.

At the meeting, Jiang Qi, a chief expert in the steel sector from China MCC, delivered a special report on “CERI’s Metallurgical Technology Path under Global Low-Carbon Standards”. Drawing on international low-carbon standards, she systematically outlined CERI's long-standing systematic technological innovation path in the green and low-carbon field of the iron and steel industry.

CERI has long been dedicated to innovation in green and low-carbon steel technologies, and continuously promotes the implementation and achievement transformation of many low-carbon technologies. Taking the release of this international standard as an opportunity and guided by global low-carbon standards, CERI will establish a replicable and scalable low-carbon metallurgical technical path that complies with international rules by focusing on four major directions: process reconstruction, ultimate energy efficiency, energy transition, and resource recycling, aiming to provide practical Chinese solutions and standard support for the green transformation of the global iron and steel industry.
